Composition Workshop
To be arranged 10 AM - 12 PM

The composition of your painting determines whether it attracts attention & praise
or whether the viewer quickly moves on to look at something else.
Composition is as important as painting skill. But it is seldom taught.

During my career I've taken classes & workshops from over 45 different artists.
Many of them were signature members of national societies. Not one of them placed
any emphasis, or devoted any significant time to discussing, composition.

In this short class, you’ll transform your understanding
of how to compose (or design) your painting.

Effective composition is critical to the success of your painting.
But composition help is elusive & seldom pursued.

Creative people want to make art, not learn a bunch of rules.
So, no rules in this class. Just a few simple guidelines.
We’ll explore ideas & make thumbnails.

You’ll see lots of examples of composition that works & composition that fails.
We’ll evaluate & discuss them.

When you begin painting after this class, composition will be almost intuitive.

I'll share the checklist I developed to banish composition blunders.
You can use it to evaluate your preliminary sketches before you begin painting.

And I'll give you MY One Simple Test that will let you know EVERY time
whether your composition works, or whether you need to work more on IT.

*****A fringe benefit of this class is
that you will understand how to paint from your photos.

Class fee: $50

Instructor: ANN BELL                281-330-3827

Where: Ann’s Studio at 2711 Main St. in Midtown Houston

I will demonstrate effective compositions and discuss why they are effective.
I'll answer all your questions.

  • I invite you to bring 1 or 2 paintings you would like help with.

  • I'll tell you what I would do to improve them.

  • I'll show you how I compose effective paintings from my personal photographs.

  • I'll give you my checklist for designing (composing) effective paintings.

  • Bring a few of your photos.
If we have time we'll make several compositions from each.

  • When the class is over, you will understand how to compose an effective painting.

  • You won't have to learn any rules.

  • You'll make some small simple sketches in class.

  • We might do show and tell from the sketches so that we all learn from the efforts of each. (NOT required, but I think you will want to participate. Even if you don't you will learn from what we share.)

  • Nature is wonderful, but not perfect. Trees aren't always planted in the best spots.

Bring

  1. a notebook or sketchbook,

  2. pen for taking notes

  3. pencil for drawing

  1. a painting whose composition needs help

  2. a few photos

***Your drawing skill is NOT a factor. We will just be making thumbnail arrangements of objects.

We will learn, practice & evaluate our designs.
I'll answer all questions.

You will not have time to paint in this short class. No supplies to bring.
I will demonstrate how I would improve any painting you bring for help.
I will NOT paint on your painting.

Only $50 for this concentrated, valuable class.
