Instructor: ANN BELL                281-330-3827

Where: Ann’s Studio at 2711 Main St. in Midtown Houston

  • Small class…5 student maximum. Each person will have a table to herself. (4 feet long)

In this small class you will learn how to design a beautiful collage. All supplies including watercolor paper support, rice paper and other decorative papers, vintage dictionaries, foreign language and other books, stamps, papers, adhesives, brushes and paint, as well as 3 dimensional embellishments will be provided. (Although you are certainly welcome to bring anything you have that you want to use.)

I've just purchased a collection of vintage dictionaries & encyclopedias to use in my collage classes.

You'll love this quality thin paper with vintage text & illustrations. I couldn't believe I found these. The vintage books have a quality paper not found in new books.  It's perfect for collage!

I will share my techniques: You will learn, by actually doing:

  • You’ll learn which adhesives to use for which weight paper. And which to use for 3 dimensional objects.

  • You’ll learn   how to apply the adhesive so that papers and other items are securely, smoothly attached.

  • You’ll learn how to choose between cutting and tearing the paper.

  • You’ll learn how to tear paper so that it lies flat for a seamless, integrated surface

  • You'll learn how to tear painted paper to expose the interior for an additional linear element in your collage.

  • You’ll learn how to simplify and unify a collage that has become cluttered or busy.

You'll enjoy creative flow in my wondrous, light-filled studio, hearing the music that inspires me,
and choosing your perfect treasures from my large collection to use in your collage.

You'll enjoy seeing the range of vintage and everyday items that can be used creatively in collage.

You'll leave with your own beautiful collage...and more ideas than you can possibly imagine.

You'll have the confidence to use your own vintage pieces in meaningful collages, without the fear of ruining them.

Step-by-step demonstration & explanation will get you started.
Then you'll make your own collage, with lots of individual attention from me.

  • Choose from my large collection of papers and other treasures.
  • Combine with your personal touch, using the appropriate adhesive medium for each.
  • Change colors if you wish.

You will receive written instructions so you can work later without wondering whether you are forgetting something important.

If you have items you want to incorporate in your collage, feel free to bring them.

I’ll provide watercolor paper as a surface for your collage.

If you prefer to work on canvas, please bring your own or purchase one in the store when you arrive.

Bring lunch if you want to work all day. I’ll have plenty of bottled water.

  • Only $85 for the day, with all supplies included.

I design my classes to be fun and suitable and useful for both beginners and advanced artists.

How can this be?

Classes are suitable for beginning painters

  • because everyone is inspired to create with new ideas and new supplies.
  • because everyone will learn some new techniques and/or applications.
  • because everyone works at her own speed, confident that she can get questions answered as they occur to her.
  • because I demonstrate and explain simple steps.

Classes are suitable for more advanced painters

  • Because I share all of my supplies. Some may be new to you.
  • Because working in a new environment interrupts old patterns.
  • Because you will find your own way of interpreting what you learn.
  • Because your soul will thank you for a new dose of artistic inspiration.

Regardless of your level of art experience, I hope you will treat yourself to a class with me in my glorious light-filled studio.

After a recent Creative Collage class, this testimonial arrived in my mailbox from one of my students:

"The first time I ever took a mixed media collage class was with Ann, but she never made me feel like a novice during the process. She only asked that I bring my imagination to the table, and her patience, encouragment, and love of the art pushed my inner critic aside and invited the artist within to come out and play."
                                                     Jennifer Watson

This email came from another student, an experienced artist & art teacher, who came for both Creative Collage and Visual Magic with Mixed Media:

Ann,

Thanks for such a great art experience.  It was such a pleasure to be allowed time to do art.  I'm still reaping the benefits of your 2-day class because I haven't lost my passion or let the weight of the world get in the way of "art time."  I couldn't sleep the other night.  Normally I would toss and turn and just hope to go back to sleep.  This time, I got up, went to my studio and worked on one of the paintings I started in your class.  I worked from 3:30 until 6:00 when I had to stop to get ready for work. I had so much positive energy that day and didn't feel the least bit tired, even though I'd been awake longer than usual.  I credit that energy from the positive influence you had on me and my development as an artist.  I'm getting a flood of ideas for new art pieces every day.  Everywhere I look there are possibilities for pictures as well as things to use in my collages.  I'm overwhelmed at the possibilities and excited beyond words.  I've kept the lid on my creativity for way too long, but being in your class somehow blew the door wide open.   It's hard to put into words, but I'm so grateful that I was able to meet you and benefit from your generosity.

British scientists have proven that looking at beautiful paintings makes you happy.

How happy could you be if you spent a day in my studio, surrounded by my beautiful paintings,
and releasing your creative spirit to create your own beautiful painting?

Here are photos taken of happy students with their paintings after a recent class. Imagine yourself here!

Collage is a versatile tool. Many of my paintings contain collage elements.
Sometimes I cover my watercolor paper with various textures of paper and then paint a watercolor on top of them.
My art cards are miniature collages.

I love collage! And you will love it too!

You'll be surprised how frequently collage will appear in your work after this class.

In the example below, I painted the background using dark acrylic. I created the bird by collaging various marbled papers
and rice papers onto the background. The heart and the red patterned elements are also collage.
I added the red lines on the bird with a linear brush. Then I added red touches to the background.

The title of this mixed media collage is "My Heart Takes Flight."
Collage can be used for representational, impressionist or abstract work.
