Create Pattern in Your Paintings

Thursday August 19, 2010, 10 AM - 2:30 PM

Experiment with new painting techniques, using stencils, hand carved stamps and "found" tools to create exciting visual textures and patterns in your paintings.

All of these techniques work on both canvas and paper. You can apply them to any surface.

If you are a painter, you'll enjoy a new, more spontaneous way of working. Or you can use them to turn tissue paper, drawing paper or other stray papers into beautiful, richly colored & visually textured art papers for dozens of creative applications. Learn to make rich surface designs & use them any way you can imagine.

I will provide all materials for you to use in class. We will be working on paper.

I'll share my stencils & stamps, so you can begin working with them.

I'll also show you how to make your own stencils. I'll teach you what to look for, so you'll recognize objects you can use as stamps or printing plates. If you have craft or scrapbook rubber stamps, some of them work, but the delicate detail usually gets lost in the paint... and ink pads don't work well with the paints.

**I teach how to carve your own stamps as a separate class. If you do not know how to carve stamps, you might enjoy that class. In this class we'll print with ordinary easy-to-find materials. If we want to modify them, we'll use scissors or a craft knife.

If you are a teacher, you'll be able to take what you learn into your own classroom. Check with your supervisor to see if you can get CPE credit for the class.

Mothers can use it to do art projects with their children.

Beginners will learn a lot of painting techniques.

Advanced painters will expand their knowledge substantially.

You can use these techniques on paper or on canvas. They are easy & inexpensive, but can give a very sophisticated effect when used with an eye to design.

You can even use the techniques to create your own patterned papers for collage, scrapbooking, or other projects. The applications of these techniques are limited only by your imagination.

Ann Bell's "Create Pattern in Your Painings" workshop will open an exciting new window
into your creativity.

Thursday, August 19, 10 AM - 2:30 PM

You can try all the things I have gathered in my years of painting and experimenting.
When you see the variety of objects that can be used as art tools, you'll look at the things in your own home and studio with new eyes.

You'll be amazed what kinds of items can be used to make pattern with paint.
Try my art toys to see which you prefer.
Step-by-step demonstration & explanation will get you started.

You will spend most of the day working with your own ideas...
but I am there to answer your questions
and to provide any help you want.

You'll be delightfully surprised at what you can do...in the fun spirit of creative play.

All confusion will disappear.

This class is helpful to all painters--from beginner to expert.

The use of pattern can be chaotic or magical. Choices of pattern and color...and how fit with each other...make a big difference. I'll share what I have learned. You'll speed up your learning curve dramatically.

I design my classes to be fun and suitable and useful for both beginners and advanced artists.

How can this be?

Classes are fun to both because everyone is inspired to create with new ideas and new supplies.

Classes are useful to both because everyone will learn some new techniques and/or applications.

Each person works at her own speed, confident that she can get questions answered as they occur to her.

Classes are suitable for beginners because I demonstrate and explain simple steps.

Classes are suitable for more advanced painters

  • Because I share all of my supplies. Some may be new to you.
  • Because working in a new environment interrupts old patterns.
  • Because you will find your own way of interpreting what you learn.
  • Because your soul will thank you for a new dose of artistic inspiration.

Regardless of your level of art experience, I hope you will treat yourself to a class with me in my glorious light-filled studio.

This class will remove all mystery about painting your own paper, through the use of

  • Demonstrations

  • Class participation in the demonstration project

  • Answers to all your questions

  • You will use the techniques to paint in class, and have your samples to take home.

  • Opportunity to see the results your classmates produce (which are always VERY different)

  • Opportunity to handle and paint on papers of different weights

I'll begin with demonstrations. You can each paint on the demo. This really proves that anyone can create these beautiful papers.

When it is finished, I'll divide it and everyone will receive a piece.

You'll see, learn (and understand)

  • How to use a variety of tools for variety and effect

  • How to combine paints, oil pastels, pencils & pens

  • How the choose the best paper for your project

  • How to choose color schemes based on the mood you want to convey

  • More than you can possibly imagine

  • And you'll paint.

I'll share my knowledge, my supplies, my wondrous, light-filled studio, and the music that inspires me.

You'll enjoy a day of creative play and inspiration. This class is new. The comments below were made by artists who took my Luscious Layered Backgrounds class.

After a recent class, I received this email from one of the artists in class:
"Ann, I enjoyed taking this class.  When I got home I was a little disappointed in what I had produced.  I started playing with the papers I made in class.  I tore them up and pasted  on other sheets.  Did some thin over painting.  Painted on a few subtle branches and vines and ended up with two of the most beautiful paintings I have ever done.  So pretty that after I turned the lights out to go to bed, I turned them back on just to look again.  One is soft and mostly pink with lavenders and greys, the other is strikingly different.  It is bright red, with green and gold.  Has an Asian feel.  Anyway, I just wanted to let you know what your class helped me to do.  Sincerely, Judy Dekan"

Another artist came for three days. After she returned home, she wrote:
"As a secondary art teacher and an artist, I have never felt more artistically free. The last three days pulled the creativity that has been waiting inside of me yearning to be released. Ann, thank you so much for exciting my innermost artist and giving me the courage to fully delve into the artist I can and should be. I can't wait to play with you again!!!!!" Candis Oberdorf, Rogers High School Art Teacher & Cheer Sponsor

The fee for this class is only $85,
including the use of my paint, paper, brushes and other tools.
You do not need to bring anything, except your lunch. I'll supply everything else.
