CREATIVE COLLAGE Workshop
Friday, March 21, 10 AM - 2:30 PM

Treat yourself to a generous serving of CREATIVITY!
This is more than a class...it's a creative experience
and a real treat for your inner child...(you know, the one who lives hidden in your heart.)

Collage is a fun, freeing style of creative play that can result in a beautiful permanent work of art.

Learn how to make collages that are beautiful, archival, permanent and durable.

Join me for a day of creative play.
I supply demonstrations, instructions & all materials PLUS glorious light & inspiring music.

You'll feel like an artist on the inside as you create your own masterpiece.

If you are a high school or middle school art teacher, you will be able to use this material in your classroom. You also may be able to get CEU credit for the class. Check with your supervisor.

Creative Play for all levels of experience, including beginners.

Class fee: $125, includes all supplies.

Instructor: ANN BELL                281-330-3827

Where: Ann’s Studio at 2711 Main St. in Midtown Houston

  • Small class.
    Personal attention.
Each person will have a table to herself.

In this small class you will learn how to design a beautiful collage. All supplies including watercolor paper support, rice paper and other decorative papers, vintage dictionaries, foreign language and other books, stamps, papers, adhesives, brushes and paint, as well as 3 dimensional embellishments will be provided. (Although you are certainly welcome to bring anything you have that you want to use.)

I've collected vintage dictionaries & encyclopedias and other wonderful papers, maps & postage stamps to use in my own work. Now I share these wonderful papers with students in my collage classes.
You'll love the thin book paper with vintage text & illustrations.
The vintage books have a quality paper not found in new books.  It's perfect for collage!

I will share my techniques: You will learn, by actually doing:

  • You’ll learn which adhesives to use for which weight paper. And which to use for 3 dimensional objects.

  • You’ll learn how to apply the adhesive so that papers and other items are securely, smoothly attached.

  • You’ll learn how to choose between cutting and tearing the paper.

  • You’ll learn how to tear paper so that it lies flat for a seamless, integrated surface

  • You'll learn how to tear painted paper to expose the interior for an additional linear element in your collage.

  • You’ll learn how to simplify and unify a collage that has become cluttered or busy. This is the important element that makes your collage look like a real painting, not just a bunch of “stuff” glued to a surface. I haven’t seen anyone else teaching this.

This level of specific detail is not usually taught. I tell you everything you need to know, so if you want to be able to work on your own after class…to do something different…not just a different version of the piece you created in class, you will have the confidence and knowledge to do so.

The search for missing information is what keeps students coming back to classes time after time, because they can’t make their work look good enough to please them. I want more than this for you.

Of course, you are welcome to repeat a class with me. I promise that the class will be a different experience when you return. And I am confident that you will return because you want to enjoy another day in my glorious studio where the creativity flows.

I always share as much as I can in the time we have together.
I share reasons why I make choices, so you understand how I decide what to do next.
I answer all of your questions, in a way that you can understand, so that when you are working by yourself later, you have a process for solving problems that arise.

If you choose to repeat one of my classes, you will have a different experience, because you are in a different place in your artist development.

I am thrilled when you tell your friends about me and my classes.

No one can teach you to be an expert painter in one easy class…but I can teach you enough that you can enjoy painting for your own pleasure. You’ll enjoy hanging your work in your home. Your friends & family will enjoy seeing your creative efforts.

If you decide that you want to learn more, I welcome you into another class, or private lessons or any of my online classes. If your goal is more than “painting for pleasure,” private lessons will move you forward the fastest.

You'll enjoy creative flow in my wondrous, light-filled studio, hearing the music that inspires me.

You'll enjoy choosing your perfect treasures from my large collection to use in your collage.

You'll enjoy seeing the range of vintage and everyday items that can be used creatively in collage.

You'll leave with your own beautiful collage...and more ideas than you can possibly imagine.

You'll have the confidence to use your own vintage pieces in meaningful collages, without the fear of ruining them.

Step-by-step demonstration & explanation will get you started.
Then you'll make your own collage, with lots of individual attention from me.

The only things I painted in this collage are the bird between the eyes and the handwritten "Imagine.".

If you have items you want to incorporate in your collage, feel free to bring them.

I’ll provide watercolor paper as a surface for your collage.

If you prefer to work on canvas, please bring your own or purchase one in the store when you arrive.

Bring lunch if you want to work all day. I’ll have plenty of bottled water.

  • Only $125 for the day, with all supplies included.

If you want to see why I'm so excited about Collage & Mixed Media, just watch this clip from a video I made for my Mixed Media Online Class.

You will enjoy the class regardless of your level of artistic experience

  • Because I give simple instructions & provide personal help as needed.

After a recent Creative Collage class, this testimonial arrived in my mailbox from one of my students:

"The first time I ever took a mixed media collage class was with Ann, but she never made me feel like a novice during the process. She only asked that I bring my imagination to the table, and her patience, encouragement, and love of the art pushed my inner critic aside and invited the artist within to come out and play."
                                                     Jennifer Watson

This email came from another student, an experienced artist & art teacher, who came for both Creative Collage and Visual Magic with Mixed Media:

Ann,

Thanks for such a great art experience.  It was such a pleasure to be allowed time to do art.   I'm still reaping the benefits of your 2-day class because I haven't lost my passion or let the weight of the world get in the way of "art time."  I couldn't sleep the other night.  Normally I would toss and turn and just hope to go back to sleep.  This time, I got up, went to my studio and worked on one of the paintings I started in your class.  I worked from 3:30 until 6:00 when I had to stop to get ready for work. I had so much positive energy that day and didn't feel the least bit tired, even though I'd been awake longer than usual.  I credit that energy from the positive influence you had on me and my development as an artist.  I'm getting a flood of ideas for new art pieces every day.  Everywhere I look there are possibilities for pictures as well as things to use in my collages.  I'm overwhelmed at the possibilities and excited beyond words.  I've kept the lid on my creativity for way too long, but being in your class somehow blew the door wide open.   It's hard to put into words, but I'm so grateful that I was able to meet you and benefit from your generosity.

British scientists have proven that looking at beautiful paintings makes you happy.

How happy could you be if you spent a day in my studio, surrounded by my beautiful paintings, and releasing your creative spirit to create your own beautiful painting?

Collage is a versatile tool. Many of my paintings contain collage elements.
Sometimes I cover my watercolor paper with various textures of paper and then paint a watercolor on top of them.
My art cards are miniature collages.

I love collage! And you will love it too! You'll be surprised how frequently collage will appear in your work after this class.

Tell a friend about this class! Just enter your friend's email address in the "to" window of the message box that opens & send.

In the example below, I painted the background using dark acrylic. I created the bird by collaging various marbled papers and rice papers onto the background. The heart and the red patterned elements are also collage.
I added the red lines on the bird with a liner brush. Then I added red touches to the background.

The title of this mixed media collage is "My Heart Takes Flight."
Collage can be used for representational, impressionist or abstract work.
